Skimmed and read my book safe passage. It wasnt at all what i though it was going to be about.  It was more about delinquency within teenagers, ex: alcohol, drugs, sex, violence, and how to prevent it. I marked it up and there is some stuff i can use but it doesnt really relate to my experience at UES. So now i am reading and marking up my second book, life space crisis intervention. This one so far is better. It talks so far about how to deal with situations like when kids are stressed fighting with something. And the best way to handle it. I actually wish i had read this book before going to UES because there were certain situations when ms. baker wasnt in the room and i had to deal with the kids fighting. Good to know for the future though!

Today i asked shannon all of the questions so that i can use them in my presentation. We didn't really do much besides the normal.

December 13

Today i had to be alone with them for a couple of minutes again. I like it better that way because i feel like someone isn't constantly watching over me and so i'm more relaxed. Charlie was having some problems with talking a lot and when he starts talking, you  usually lose him after the first  2 minutes. Shannon noticed this and talked to charlie about how he can check in with someone to make sure they know what hes talking about. She showed me a book that they use characters from. it's called superflex.

December 18

Today not a whole lot went on. It was pretty mellow, they just ate and played games.
I told Shannon that the next time would be my last, and she didn't know if she would be there or not. Hopefully she will be.

December 20th

Today was my last day. It was kind of sad because i'll probably never see these kids again and i don't think they really understood i wasn't coming in anymore.

There was another kid, max here today. At first the boys were just eating but then Ms. Baker had to go somewhere for a second which turned into almost 20 minutes, and i had to watch them. They were acting very crazy too. I tried to do what she would do but it's difficult for them to take me seriously because i'm a kid too. I had to balance between being strict and making them eat and not yell, but not too over the top because i'm not their teacher and that's not what i'm there to do. They never really calmed down so i guess what i was doing didn't work. Then when she came back she had to take a phone call and so i had to keep them quiet.

Today Shannon was very busy and she said this is what pretty much her whole day is. Usually when i go, it's the calmest.

November 26

Today not much happened

Shannon talked to me about how we could find a book and i can read it to them at lunch then we can talk about the meaning behind it and what they would do in that situation.

December 4

Today Shannon never showed up. When i walked upstairs i found charlie and ethan sitting at a table by themselves waiting to get in the room. So i sat with them but she never came. They continued to eat their lunch and then i let them have play time like they usually do. It was cool to be able to be on my own with them because it feels more laid back and like i'm not being judged. There were some times where i had to ask them to stop, like ethan slamming something on the table making a lot of noise. and running in the hall trying to poke each other. 

I think it's very irresponsible of the school to know that Shannon wasn't there, yet not tell the boys or myself. During that time they were unaccounted for and could have been anywhere

December 6th

Today there was a new kid, Seth. he's going to start coming every so often.
All of the other boys were there, Owen, Charlie, and Ethan.

Owen got in a fight with Charlie because charlie made a joke about a video game. He walked up to him and told him they aren't friends anymore and they never will be. So i got to see how Shannon handled that and she talked to Owen about how that wasn't very nice and charlie came over to explain what his joke meant. Then they were fine once owen apologized

Then owen got mad at seth for taking the leggos he wanted during play time. Shannon had to talk to him again about how he needs to handle things better and that those leggos are very anybody to use.

At the end she told me how it was hard to have new people around him when he's not used to it.

November 8,2012

i spent 45 minutes here.

Today Shannon wasn't there again. it was the same lady as last time. but instead of being in our normal room, we went to the "excel room". I don't really know what it was. There was a bunch of boys in there eating lunch and playing games. I tried to ask her what this room was for but she made a sarcastic comment and didn't answer me. I got to know some more kids though and hang out with them. 2 kids got in trouble though. she allowed them to both go to the bathroom and there was also a 1st grader in there. Some words were said then i believe the 1st grader pulled down his pants in front of them. Teachers came into the room to figure out what happened and the lady was pretty much just rude about it.

My 3 learning goals are...

1.) To make sure i want to go to college for psychology. This helps with that because being a guidance counselor is a career option.

2.) How to communicate with kids

3.) How to handle difficult situations and how to do the job in general.

talked about how it's confidential but charlie has mind problems and other people watching might think hes being rude and thinking "oh why are they letting him say that or ttreat them that way" but it's actually because theres something wrong with him. it wouldn't be okay to punish him for that reasons, they just have to explain things more to him.
He skipped his nurses visit which made him miss play time during lunch. He threw a fit and thats what started everything.

November 1,2012

Today it was just Charlie there. We didn't really do much. He talked back to ms. baker a little more than usual today. She asked him what he did at recess and he didn't think it was her business so then they had a talk about that and why someone might as about someone else. He thinks its not okay to ask something personal in public when other people can hear the answer. and she explained she was just trying to make conversation and ask about himself. It ended with playing checkers. Owen was supposed to be there today but apparently he has a memory problem and he forgets things a lot.

October 26,2012

Today all 3 boys were there for the first time. We ate lunch and then the boys played cards. they really like cards, they play it alot. (uno)
Owen got in another fight with a kid on the play ground. Hunter invaded his space so he jumped on Hunter's back.
Shannon had to go talk to a teacher really quick and left me with them. They were playing UNO and Owen said something to Charlie and then Charlie hit Owen in the face/eye. I told Charlie that wasn't okay and he can't do that and made sure Owen was okay. I didn't really know what to do or how i should have handled it. Then towards the end CHarlie was sitting on the bean bag while Ethan ran and jumped on it, then Owen went and laid on Charlie so i had to tell him to get off.

Ethan is going to Pakistan with his family for 3 weeks. I thought that was pretty cool.

I went to UES again today. When I got there Shannon said that there was a physical fight on the playground during recess so the boys were coming up to talk about it. Charlie and Owen were playing a game called Hobbles and Vampires. The two are against each other and the hobbles have secrets that the vampires need to find out. ( or something) So Owen was trying to distract Charlie so the other vampires could get information. Owen ended up running up to Charlie and jumping on his back, so Charlie started elbowing him. According to Owen it was very hard and hurtful, but to Charlie it was a little nudge. Once Owen got off, he punched Charlie and from there they just started hitting each other. Shannon discussed with them that physical altercations are never okay and the next time this happens they will lose their recess'. They also talked about other games that would be okay to play that didn't involve contact. The boys left as friends and not being mad at each other and understanding what they did wasn't okay and they need to make better choices. Both of them are really smart though will understanding what she is saying. Owen kept saying that Hobbles and Vampires always got them in trouble because someone always started fighting. He though nobody ever understood that they need to stop if they want to keep playing it.

Today i went to UES for the first time. I got there and signed in. I had to wait a little while for Ms. Baker to come and get me. On the way up to her room she told me about the lunch group that she does with kids who have problems being around a bunch of other people and need to be reminded to eat. Today I met Charlie who is a 2nd grader. She also showed me what her daily schedule looks like and how most people don't realize everything that a elementary school guidance counselor does. She was, for the most part, booked all day every day. With Charlie we talked about his highs and lows of the week and how his day was going. We took a timed 3 minutes break where there was no talking so he could just eat. After he ate we played a game of UNO. According to him he won. During the game she tries to incorporate some lessons. They are very competitive and joke around a lot while playing. She told him how if we don't know someone and what they think is funny, then something we say could hurt their feelings. He showed us what his face looks like when someone says something to hurt his feelings. She also gave me a website i could check out that explains what a guidance counselor should be doing. I go back tomorrow. We decided i would go monday, tuesday, and thursdays of every week.

Today i spent 1 hour there.

Today George, Metta, Shannon, and myself went down to UES to meet and interview with the principal and two other ladies. They talked to us about what they expect, what we expect, and what needs to happen from there. We also toured around the school a little. Now it's up to us to figure out times when we will go down and we have to email them. We spent an hour here.

Stephanie agreed to let Shannon and I drive together to UES.

Right now Shannon and I are trying to talk to Stephanie about driving together to UES. We've talked to her a little and she told us to get notes from both of our parents, so we did that and gave them to her. Now we're waiting to talk to her with George but she keeps cancelling appointments because she's too busy.

I went to the library and picked out 2 books; Safe Passage- Making it Through Adolescence in a Risky Society by Joy G. Dryfoos and also Life Space Crisis Intervention by Nicholas J. Long, Marry M. Wood and Frank A. Fecser.
I plan on reading all of the first book and just looking through certain pages in the second.
